Wednesday, July 6: Plain White T’s

The Summer Concert Series kicks off with American pop punk band and “Hey There Delilah” singers Plain White T’s with special guest Tonic.

@PlainWhiteTs #PlainWhiteTs

It’s been years since the Plain White T’s kicked off their career in the Chicago suburbs, playing a mix of pop, punk, and melody-driven rock & roll in basements and clubs across the metro area. The future looks bright for the Plain White T’s. Even so, American Nights is an album that lives in the present, focusing on what’s happening now instead of what might happen tomorrow. “Pause,” the album’s lead single, urges the listener to live in the moment, while “Stay” finds its narrator prolonging the inevitable end of a relationship, looking to spend one final hour with his partner before the two part ways. The tempo picks up during the anthemic title track, where Higgenson hits the streets of his hometown with a pretty woman in the shotgun seat, and then cools down during Lopez’s “Love Again,” a breezy love song with a melody reminiscent of “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” Those two bookends — the epic rock songs and the acoustic-leaning ballads — have always been the Plain White T’s bread and butter, and they’re dished up in hefty servings throughout the album.

With six top 10 singles, over 4 million records sold, multiple Grammy nominations, platinum albums, hit songs around the world including the #1 most-played rock song of 1998, it is safe to say that Tonic is a musical powerhouse. Merging the raw honesty of rock with their unabashed melodies Tonic have helped usher rock n roll into the new millennium. Guitarist Emerson Hart founded Tonic with guitarist Jeff Russo – a childhood friend – adding bassist Dan Lavery shortly after inception. After storming the charts with debut album Lemon Parade and its monster hit “If You Could Only See,” the band released two additional studio albums (Sugar, the twice Grammy-nominated Head On Straight and the self-titled Tonic). With multiple soundtrack features, including the lead single from “American Pie” (“You Wanted More”), Tonic garnered this momentum with the release of their Greatest Hits CD/DVD package in July of 2009. After a two-year sabbatical, the band is back in the studio, working on new material to be released in the Fall of 2015 Wednesday, July 13: Atlas Genius The Series heads down under with this week’s performance by alternative rock band and Australia natives, Atlas Genius.

@AtlasGenius #AtlasGenius

For brothers Keith and Michael Jeffery, home holds a certain kind of magic. On first single “Molecules,” their reconciliations with their own destinies are translated from swirling chaos and angst to pure danceability. “It’s a song about equality and our place in the universe. It’s also about the relative scale of things. Do we really have as big of a say in our destiny as we like to think we do? On a universal level, I would say that perhaps we don’t.” The coastal Australian city where they grew up is more than the cradle of their youth – it was the soil for their dreams and the birthplace of their success. Australia was where they forged their breakout hit, ”Trojans,” which earned them a gold record and took Atlas Genius from studio project to critically acclaimed international act. After a few months turned into two years on the road in support of their debut album, When It Was Now – after exploring distant towns in distant countries, pouring their souls out in theaters all over the world – home called. But back in Australia, the blank

canvas the brothers faced reflected back two very different people from the ones who had crafted When It Was Now. In the time they had been away, they had created a new normal – built a new community, endured heartbreak, and seen the world.

Wednesday, July 20: Smash Mouth

This week’s concert features SoCal natives Smash Mouth who will headline the show with fan favorites including party anthem from the 2000’s “All Star.”

@Smashmouth #Smashmouth

A look back to Smash Mouth’s formative year’s shows us a band determined to make an impact from the get go. Formed in late 1994, the band immediately begins recording demos and showcasing in both San Jose and Hollywood CA. In June 1997, Smash Mouth is signed to Interscope Records when label brass catch wind of an unknown (and unsigned) band being ADDED to highly-influential L.A. radio station KROQ’s playlist after only one (!) spin of their song “Walkin’ on the Sun”. Smash Mouth’s major-label debut “Fush Yu Mang” goes more than DOUBLE PLATINUM and sets the table for what most consider their masterpiece, the brilliant follow-up album “Astrolounge”. No sophomore slump for these guys. Boasting three top-ten hits (“All-Star,” “Then the Morning Comes,” and “Can’t Get Enough Of You Baby,”) sales for “Astrolounge” are nearly double those for their debut, approaching QUADRUPLE PLATINUM status. Smash Mouth’s third eponymous Interscope release features the ecstatic first single “Pacific Coast Party” and the smash hit “I’m a Believer”. Around this time, Smash Mouth crosses over to the film world by providing the musical heart of the soundtrack for “Shrek” and even making a cameo appearance in the movie “Rat Race”. In recent years, Smash Mouth has focused on touring and entertaining troops in Japan, Guam, Guantanamo Bay, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

Wednesday, July 27: Cher Lloyd

The Summer Concert Series closes out with internationally acclaimed British artist Cher Lloyd for the July 27 finale, with AJ as opening act.

@CherLloyd #CherLloyd

Cher has certainly come a long way from the small town of Malvern, Worcestershire where she was born. Following a childhood of singing and “intentionally trying to stand out from the crowd at school,” she gained international popularity at just 17-years-old. Throughout the next six years, she traversed the globe and dropped one hit after another. However, the world truly gets a glimpse of her for the first time now. Her instantly recognizable powerhouse voice has ignited multiplatinum smashes such as “Want U Back,” “Oath” [Feat. Becky G], and Demi Lovato’s “Really Don’t Care” in addition to 2011’s Sticks & Stones and 2014’s “Sorry, I’m Late,” which clocked in at #12 on the Billboard Top 200. She’s quietly amassed a fervent diehard audience, which eclipsed 7 million on Twitter, 7.5 million on Facebook, and 1.9 million on Instagram by 2016. She spent three years touring nonstop in front of sold out crowds with Fifth Harmony, Demi Lovato, and many more. Now, back with new material, Cher is ready to take the world by storm again with an exciting new release on the horizon and more live dates to come.
